In North America, movie theaters are slowly starting to reopen and the X-Men spinoff The New Mutants opened with $3.1 million across 2,412 locations on Friday.

About 62% of domestic locations are open, while theaters in California, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Michigan, Maryland, New Mexico, and parts of Arizona have remained closed for the past five months. Some theaters were closed across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas due to Hurricane Laura.

Disney inherited the film from Fox and it was supposed to debut back in 2018, but it’s been delayed several times. Disney took The New Mutants off its schedule in Match, when cinemas first started to close due to COVID-19.

The film is based on the X-Men comic-book series which follows five young mutants who are trapped in a secret facility against their will.

Josh Boone directed the film with Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Alice Braga, Henry Zaga, and Charlie Heaton starring.

Three other films opened this week—The personal History of David Copperfield, Bill & Ted Face the Music, and Fatima.
