Legally Blonde went down in history as one of the most beloved girl-power comedies of the early 2000s, and its next chapter is on the horizon. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a spin-off series inspired by the original movie, produced by its star Reese Witherspoon.

This project is still in the early stages of development, and Amazon is keeping plot details under wraps, but we know that Gossip Girl developers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writing the script. They’re also executive producing it alongside Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine partner Lauren Neustadter, plus the Legally Blonde movie franchise producer Marc Platt.

Deadline described this project as an “offshoot” so it’s possible it won’t center on the original Legally Blonde heroine Elle Woods, while still being set in the same universe. Amazon is also looking into expanding this franchise with another potential spin-off, which is still in the preliminary stages of development.

Legally Blonde came out in 2001, and it starred Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who finds her purpose after making an unconventional decision to become a Harvard Law student. Its sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde came out in 2003, and the potential third film starring Witherspoon is currently in development.
