After years of speculations about a potential Spaceballs sequel, Amazon MGM is finally determined to make it happen. They green-lit a sequel with Josh Gad in the lead role, and he’ll produce it alongside Mel Brooks, who directed the first film.

Spaceballs came out in 1987 and went down in history as one of the most iconic space opera parodies. It primarily poked fun at the original Star Wars trilogy, while also spoofing some of the other iconic sci-fi franchises of that era, such as Star Trek, Alien, and Planet of the Apes.

According to its official logline, the original film followed “a star-pilot for hire and his trusty sidekick [who] must come to the rescue of a princess and save Planet Druidia from the clutches of the evil Spaceballs.”

Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, and Lorene Yarnell led the cast of the first film in the franchise, but it’s unclear if any of them would reprise their roles. Josh Gad is currently the only actor attached to this project in a mystery role.

He’s also coming on board as one of the producers alongside Mel Brooks, who directed, co-wrote, produced, and starred in the first film. Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez co-wrote the script for the sequel alongside Gad, while Josh Greenbaum will be in charge of directing it.
