Los Angeles Angels will have to wrap up their 2020 campaign without shortstop Andrelton Simmons. According to the team’s official announcement, Simmons decided to opt-out for the remainder of the MLB season.

Simmons’ decision comes after it became likely that the Angels won’t make it to the playoffs this season. They currently sit at 24-31, being 4.5 games behind the last wild-card spot in the American League with just a handful of matches left to be played.

Simmons, who batted .297 with 10 RBIs and no home runs this season, later detailed his opt-out via a statement issued by his agency.

“I have made the decision to opt-out of the remainder of this season,” said the 31-year-old defensive standout. “At this moment, I feel this is the best decision for me and for my family. We don’t know what the future holds, but we would like to sincerely thank the Angels organization and Angels fans for welcoming and making us feel at home.”

This could well be the end of Andrelton Simmons’ time with the LA Angels organization, considering that he will become a free agent in the offseason. Simmons previously hinted at the possibility of re-signing with the franchise but said he is intent on exploring his options.

Simmons made his MLB debut in 2012 with Atlanta Braves, where he spent four seasons before joining the Angels in a multi-player trade. He has a career batting average of .269 with 67 homers and 406 RBIs, while he also won four Golden Glove Awards during his time in the league.
