Some pretty amazing movies opened the Venice Film Festival over the years, and the upcoming edition will be no exception. Tim Burton’s long awaited horror comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been chosen as the opening film of this prestigious festival.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will see three generations of the Deetz family reunited under the same roof after an unexpected family tragedy. Trouble starts when Lydia’s rebellious daughter Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife, and it’s just a matter of time before someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times to bring him back.

Michael Keaton will lead the cast as Beetlejuice, and he’ll be joined by Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jenna Ortega as the Deetz women, plus Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles.

The Venice Film Festival chief Alberto Barbera said they’re proud and honored to host the world premiere of Burton’s next project.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks the long-awaited return of one of the most iconic characters of Tim Burton’s cinema, but also the happy confirmation of the extraordinary visionary talent and the masterly realization of one of the most fascinating auteurs of his time,” said Barbera in a statement.

The 81st Venice International Film Festival will take place from August 28 to September 7, with French actress Isabelle Huppert serving as the jury president.
