It’s been almost five years since Ed Sheeran released his smash hit “Shape of You” and he’s still breaking records with this song. The No. 1 single from his third studio album Divide just made history as the first song to ever reach three billion streams on Spotify.

Sheeran celebrated this historic milestone by posting a video on social media, where he shared a backstory behind its release history and revealed it was never meant to be a single in the first place.

“Ben Cook from my label, was basically saying ‘You have to put this on the album. it had to be a single.’ And I said to him, ‘I want ‘Castle on the Hill’ to be the first single… We agreed to disagree and put both songs out at once. And I have to say, Ben, I was wrong and you were very much right. And here we are!” said Sheeran in the video.

“Shape of You” was indeed released as one of the double lead singles from his 2017 album Divide, along with “Castle on the Hill”. It hit No. 1 in 34 countries and won numerous accolades, including the British single of the year at the Brit Awards and the best pop solo performance at the Grammy Awards.
