Visionary filmmaker Richard Linklater is plotting his next project, and he managed to round out a pretty impressive cast. Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott will star in his new film Blue Moon, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.

Blue Moon will reunite Linklater with Robert Kaplow, whose novel Me and Orson Welles inspired Linklater’s 2008 film of the same name. It will center on the legendary songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and it will be set on the night of the Broadway opening of the legendary musical Oklahoma!, which saw Rodgers collaborate with Oscar Hammerstein II as Hart’s replacement for the first time.

This is a long-time passion project for Linklater and Hawke, and they’re excited and grateful to finally bring it to life after developing the story for over a decade. Hawke previously collaborated with Linklater on several projects, including the Before trilogy and Boyhood.

In addition to Hawke, Blue Moon will also star Margaret Qualley (Drive-Away Dolls), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers).

Sony Pictures Classics’ spokesperson said they’re thrilled to finally announce this project is officially happening after developing it with Linklater for a full year. Their relationship goes all the way back to the 90s when they distributed his film SubUrbia before joining forces on Before Midnight.
