There will be a Game of Thrones prequel — and there will be dragons.

HBO may have decided to cancel its initial spin-off from Kingsman writer, Jane Goldman, which planned to star Naomi Watts, but it has also chosen to give a series order to House of the Dragon.

The series from George R.R. Martin and co-creator of Colony, Ryan Condal, will be set in the early days of Westeros (300 years before the events we were witness to) and focus on House Targaryen which became involved in a civil war.

An alumnus from the original series is also onboard as Miguel Sapochnik, who directed episodes such as The Long Night, Battle of the Bastards, and Hardhome, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Condal.

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” said HBO programming president, Casey Bloys. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

Bring on the dragons!
