Dame Maggie Smith, the legendary actress whose career on stage and screen spanned seven decades, passed away at 89. Tributes poured in from her peers and fans alike, who honored her life and legacy, which includes two Oscar-winning performances and roles in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter.
Smith’s sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin released a statement, announcing she passed away peacefully on September 27, surrounded by her loved ones. Tributes poured in from many of her former co-stars and public figures, including King Charles III, who said he was deeply saddened by her passing.
“As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances, and her warmth and wit that shone through both off and on the stage,” the monarch wrote in a statement.
Smith’s Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint also paid tributes to the actress, along with Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and stars Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery.
In addition to Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, Smith’s filmography includes Oscar-winning roles in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and California Suite. She’s been nominated for this award on four more occasions, and her notable credits also include Hook, Sister Act, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, A Room with a View, and Gosford Park.
