Donald Sutherland, the Hollywood legend who went down in history as one of the most prolific actors of his generation, passed away at 88. His son Kiefer Sutherland announced his death, and tributes quickly poured in from fans and fellow actors who followed his career for over six decades.
Kiefer Sutherland took to social media to announce that his father passed away after a long illness, and took a moment to reflect on his enduring legacy.
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that,” he wrote in a statement.
Sutherland has been acting since the 60s, and he owes his big break to such films as The Dirty Dozen and M*A*S*H. He went on to star in over 200 projects over the years, including Don’t Look Now (1973), Animal House (1978), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Ordinary People (1980), The Italian Job (2003), Pride & Prejudice (2005), and The Hunger Games franchise.
Despite never being nominated for an Oscar, Sutherland received an Academy Honorary Award in 2017. He’s also a recipient of one Primetime Emmy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and countless other prestigious honors.
