How do you make a great Star Wars film? What about these movies have fans from every generation watching and rewatching this epic series? That’s exactly what Rian Johnson is hoping to discover as he sits down to write a brand new Star Wars trilogy.

A New Trilogy For A New Generation

Just before Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, Lucasfilm announced Johnson, the film’s director, would write and direct the next trilogy, taking place beyond Episode IX and introducing brand new characters and stories into the franchise. As Johnson told IGN, “part of the excitement of it is really trying to hone in on ‘what is Star Wars?’ What was Star Wars for me the very first time I saw it when I was a little kid?”

What will set these new films apart is that Johnson will try to recreate the formula for a successful Star Wars franchise, but without including anyone of Skywalker lineage or other notable characters from the saga. As Johnson put it, “once you get past the things that are the iconography of Star Wars – once you say, okay, if it doesn’t have the Falcon; if it doesn’t have someone with Skywalker as their last name; if we don’t go to Tatooine, what is it?”
