After an entire decade of being a crucial member of the Grey’s Anatomy cast, Jesse Williams is ready to hang up his scrubs. The actor known for playing the role of Jackson Avery in the beloved medical drama announced his decision to leave the show after 12 seasons.

Williams’s exit came as a shocker for the fans, and it was announced in a recent episode, “Look Up Child”. The upcoming episode “Tradition” will be his last, and it’s set to air on May 20th.

In an official statement announcing his departure, Williams thanked everyone who helped him on this journey and said she’s immensely proud of the work they’ve done over the years.

“I will forever be grateful for the boundless opportunities provided me by Shonda, the network, studio, fellow castmates, our incredible crew … As an actor, director and person, I have been obscenely lucky to learn so much from so many and I thank our beautiful fans,” said Williams.

Williams became a key member of the Grey’s Anatomy team in 2009, but this show hasn’t been the only thing keeping him busy. He recently appeared on its spin-off Station 19 and starred on the hit mini-series Little Fires Everywhere. He also branched out to production and served as one of the producers of the Oscar-winning short film Two Distant Strangers.
