As both a singer and an actress, Janelle Monáe has not starred in many film roles which require her to sing. But all that is about the change.

The 32 year old has signed on to star in the live-action adaptation of Lady and the Tramp.

The Disney animation originally came out in 1955 and tells the story of a female American Cocker Spaniel named Lady who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family, and a male stray mongrel called the Tramp.

The pair are set to be voiced by Westworld actress Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux of Maniac.

Janelle will take on the role of pound dog Peg, who was voiced by another singer in the original, Peggy Lee.

The rest of the cast includes Ugly Betty actress Ashley Jensen as Scottish terrier Jackie, while Doctor Strange star Benedict Wong will play English bulldog Bull.

Charlie Bean, who directed The Lego Ninjago Movie, will helm the project.
