Lily Allen responds to criticisms that she is too “rich” and “privileged” to talk genuinely about social issues.

The pop-star, who has recently released her latest album No Shame spoke with NME in an exclusive interview about her relationship with the tabloids.

One of the big criticisms she has received following her support of the victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy is that her outspoken involvement is rendered disingenuous by her privilege. The singer refused to hold back on her opinions and publicly accused the government of withholding the real number of fatalities.

Allen responded to this ‘privileged’ label: “Well, I’m a million pounds in debt, so put that in! But you know, there’s a reason that’s what they picked on [with Grenfell].”

She continued: “Because I haven’t been falling out of nightclubs for the last two years, they’ll say, ‘Well, she’s rich.’ If I’d been falling out of nightclubs, they wouldn’t bother with the rich thing – they’d just be like, ‘She’s a f**ktard.’ So I think it’s whatever they can get with.”
