Ang Lee’s acclaimed film The Wedding Banquet is getting a modern-day remake, and its cast is shaping up to be pretty amazing. Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang landed lead roles in Andrew Ahn’s reimagining of Lee’s cult Oscar-nominated romantic comedy.

The new remake will focus on two couples – Min and Chris, and Liz and Angela. When Chris rejects Min’s spontaneous marriage proposal, he asks his friend Angela to marry him instead and promises he’ll pay for her partner Liz’s IVF treatments in exchange for his green card. Their plans go out of the window when Min’s grandmother comes from Seoul, determined to throw them an extravagant Korean wedding banquet.

Ang Lee, who established his reputation as a filmmaker on the rise when The Wedding Banquet premiered to international acclaim in 1993, gave this remake his seal of approval.

“It warms my heart to see how my film from so many years ago has inspired a new generation to reimagine a new and different version. I look forward to seeing what Andrew Ahn and his wonderful cast create,” said Lee in a statement.

Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) will lead the cast of this promising remake. They’ll be joined by Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars), Yuh-jung Youn (The Last Emperor), and Joan Chen (Minari).
