Michaela Coel found perfect partners in crime in HBO and BBC while working on I May Destroy You, and their next collaboration is on the way. Coel’s drama series First Day On Earth has received a green light, and the Emmy winner will serve as its star, creator, and executive producer.

Coel will lead First Day On Earth as a British novelist Henri, who feels stuck because her work has dried up and her relationship is going nowhere. The change seems on the horizon when she receives an offer to work on a film in Ghana, where her estranged father lives, but nothing turns out as expected when she decides to head to her parents’ homeland.

Coel said she’s delighted to re-team with her partners at  Various Artists Limited, HBO, and BBC and join forces with A24.

“Thanks to all of their combined taste, care, and expertise, I feel our show is in great hands. First Day on Earth is another very personal story for me which I hope will engage viewers from all over the world, and I can’t wait for audiences to go on Henri’s journey with her,” said Coel in a statement.

Coel’s previous project with HBO and BBC, the black comedy I May Destroy You was met with critical acclaim following its premiere in 2020, and it won an Emmy for outstanding writing for a limited series.
