A lot of young Hollywood hunks were in the running for the coveted role of Goose’s son in the highly anticipated Top Gun sequel. Miles Teller managed to edge them out and celebrated his casting by simply tweeting “I feel the need…” Die-hard fans of the original movie caught that reference, and they can’t wait to see him joining forces with Tom Cruise.

Paramount Pictures expressed their interest to do Top Gun sequel all the way back in 2010. It took years to get the project off the ground, especially after the original director Tony Scott passed away. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer stayed committed, and the movie was green-lighted after Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer decided to come back.

Having Maverick and Iceman on board gave wings to this sequel, but there was still something missing. Maverick’s BFF Nick “Goose” Bradshaw couldn’t possibly return since he died in the first film. Screenwriters found a way to include his son in Top Gun 2, and Teller ended up beating out the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell to win this role.

Joseph Kosinski, who already worked with both Cruise and Teller, will direct the upcoming Top Gun sequel. The plot is still under wraps, but it will probably center on Maverick mentoring younger pilots. The movie will premiere on July 11th, 2019 and it already seems like a quintessential summer blockbuster.
