Netflix Cancels “Altered Carbon” After Two Seasons

Chris Conner and Anthony Mackie in "Altered Carbon"

Netflix canceled several fan-favorite shows in the last few weeks, and Altered Carbon is the latest to end up on their chopping block. The mind-bending cyberpunk drama has been canceled by the streaming giant after two seasons.

Altered Carbon is based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel of the same name, and it takes place in the distant future where consciousness can be transferred into different bodies. It centers on prisoner, Takeshi Kovacs, who’s brought back to life after 250 years and forced to solve a mind-bending murder to win his freedom.

Both seasons were well-received by the critics, and the first even received two nominations at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Since Kovacs can inhabit different bodies, he was portrayed by two actors—Joel Kinnaman in Season 1 and Anthony Mackie in Season 2.

Netflix didn’t report the reason behind this cancelation, but it wasn’t COVID related, according to Deadline. The decision was reportedly made all the way back in April, and it was based on the streamer’s standard viewership vs. cost renewal approach.
