Fans lost it when Olivia Rodrigo announced her comeback single “Vampire”, and this song lived up to the hype. The young singer embraced her dark side in the thrilling music video for her comeback single, which chronicles the harrowing journey of dealing with bloodsuckers in your life.

Directed by Rodrigo’s frequent collaborator Petra Collins, the video opens with the singer performing in an ethereal flower field, that’s actually a part of an award show scenography. She escapes the stage covered in blood after being hit by a falling light, and the video closes with an early shot that shows her being lifted into the night sky.

Rodrigo described “Vampire” as her version of rock opera, and she said its sound significantly evolved after producer Dan Nigro hopped on board and helped improve her original piano version.

“It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to,” said Rodrigo in a statement.

“Vampire” was released as the lead single from her highly-anticipated sophomore studio album Guts, set to be released on September 8.
