The first pictures have been released of Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland in the upcoming Pathe and BBC Films biopic. Set in the sixties and concentrating on the last few years of her life, Judy is an account of her performances at Talk of the Town nightclub in London, her struggle with her management team and the family drama behind the scenes.
Virtually unrecognizable, Zellweger looks stunning as the principal lead. The movie also stars Jesse Buckley, Finn Wittrock, and Micheal Gambon. Filming started in October last year.
While she may not be the most obvious choice to play the Wizard Of Oz star, it’s certainly not her first musical role. After her success as Bridget Jones, a year later she went on to play Roxie in Chicago with Catherine Zeta-Jones. For her role, she won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar. No one seems better suited for the role of Judy, who was only a year older than Zellweger when the film is set.
As well as awards for Chicago, she’s won several awards for her acting from Baftas to Golden Globes and an Academy Awards for her role in 2003’s Cold Mountain.
