Robert Downey Jr. had the time of his life playing Iron Man, and he’s ready to put his twist on another iconic Marvel character. The Oscar-winning actor confirmed he’s returning to the MCU as none other than Doctor Doom at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend.
Marvel unveiled grand plans for Avengers and Fantastic Four at this year’s Comic-Con and shared many exciting news about the future of the MCU. The first footage from The Fantastic Four: First Steps was shown, Harrison Ford transformed into Red Hulk in the new Captain America: Brave New World trailer, while the Russo brothers confirmed they’re coming back to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The most exciting announcement, however, came when a dozen masked figures in olive robes stepped on stage, along with a man in a green Doctor Doom-inspired suit. The room exploded once it was revealed that the man behind the mask was none other than Robert Downey Jr.
Downey was one of the actors who helped the MCU grow into the sensation it is today while playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man. His casting as Doctor Doom is a part of Marvel’s attempt to revitalize the MCU after Jonathan Majors’s exit as Kang left them searching for an epic new villain.
