In his first interview since the news was announced, Robert Pattison has shared his feelings about being cast as the next Batman.

The news that the Twilight star would be filling the shoes of Ben Affleck was released prematurely. Pattison has said he was “furious” as he was worried that Warner Bros. would get spooked and change their mind about giving him the role. Fortunately, the decision remains unchanged and the problem Pattison currently faces is prejudice from fans who can’t shake his image as the teen vampire heartthrob, Edward Cullen. This is not a new problem for Pattison, who has done his best to avoid typecasting since the Twilight franchise wrapped up. He is subsequently unbothered by people’s opinions regarding his new role.

In response to the backlash, Pattison told Variety: “To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting. It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”

In the same interview, Pattison also credited Matt Reeves directing. He said: “It’s an interesting direction. It’s something from the comics which hasn’t really been explored yet.”

He continued: “It’s interesting the different directions you can take with it and that the, in some ways, quite a specific character actually has a lot of leeway. When you look at the different tones of the movies and TV shows, you can do quite a lot with it.”

The new Batman movie is scheduled for June 25, 2021.
