Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan are two of Ireland’s biggest acting talents of their generation, and their first film together was a long time coming. The first trailer for Garth Davis’ sci-fi psychological thriller Foe is here, and it sees the duo playing a troubled couple facing an uncertain future.

According to its official synopsis, Foe offers “mesmerizing imagery and persistent questions about the nature of humanity (and artificial humanity) to bring the not-too-distant future to luminous life.” It’s based on the book of the same name by Iain Reid, who co-wrote the script with the film’s director Garth Davis.

Foe centers on Hen and Junior, a young married couple living on a secluded farm, that has been in Junior’s family for generations. Their quiet life is thrown upside down when an uninvited stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up at their door with a startling proposal, which sounds straight out of an episode of Black Mirror.

Mescal is fresh off his Oscar-nominated role in the indie drama Aftersun, and we’ll get to see him in All of Us Strangers alongside Andrew Scott later this year. Ronan most recently starred in murder mystery See How They Run, and she’s attached to Steve McQueen’s historical drama Blitz.

Foe will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, before being released by Amazon on October 6.
