Shawn Mendes is back with his first music video of the year, and it’s truly heart-wrenching to watch. The Canadian singer sings about his heartbreak in his latest single “It’ll Be Okay” as he walks around Toronto on a snowy night.

This music video was directed by Jay Martin, who previously collaborated with Mendes on “Stitches” and “In My Blood”.

The Canadian hitmaker told his fans that the video is beautiful before officially sharing it with the world, but admitted that he had trouble filming it. “The video was extremely cold to film. We were in the city of Toronto and it was nighttime and it was freezing. There was lots of fake snow going in my mouth. But other than that, it was pretty nice,” recalled Mendes on social media.

“It’ll Be Okay” was first released in early December, only two weeks after the singer’s public split with Camila Cabello. The music video isn’t extremely plot-driven, but it perfectly reflects his chilling emotional state, as he wanders through Toronto, with the city’s skyline and glistening snow as his backdrop.

“It’ll Be Okay” marks a major tonal shift from Mendes’ previous single, “Summer of Love” featuring Tainy. It’s still unclear if they’ll be included on his next album, the follow-up to 2020’s Wonder.
