Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog set records during its opening weekend in North American box offices.

The action-adventure feature, based on the Sega video game character, opened in 4,130 cinemas, making $65 billion in four days.

The film follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz), the world’s fastest hedgehog, and his best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), as they try to save the planet from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Sonic the Hedgehog is expected to break the record for the best video game feature adaption, currently held by Legendary/Warner Bro’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which brought in $54.3 million in three days. Sonic the Hedgehog slightly trailed, making $53.99 million in three days.

Even though the film’s release was delayed because of the backlash from fans about the look of Sonic, and the decision by Paramount and director Jeff Fowler to re-design the character, reviews have so far been positive.
