This year’s BET Awards were one wild ride, and we witnessed a tie in one of the ceremony’s most important categories. BET voters struggled to make a choice between SZA’s SOS and Beyoncé’s Renaissance, and eventually gave the album of the year award to both.
The two R&B queens had to beat some tough competition to take the night’s biggest award home. The album of the year field also included Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Her Loss by Drake and 21 Savage, DJ Khaled’s God Did, Chris Brown’s Breezy, and GloRilla’s Anyways, Life’s Great.
In addition to tying for album of the year, both SZA and Beyoncé took two more trophies home. Beyoncé earned the BET Her Award and the Viewer’s Choice Award for her catchy single “Break My Soul,” while SZA was honored as the best female R&B/pop artist and won the award for video of the year with her viral hit “Kill Bill.”
When it comes to the movie field, it was a big night for Marvel’s superhero blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It’s beaten tough competition, including Creed 3, Nope, and The Woman King, to claim the title of the best movie, while its star Angela Bassett picked up a trophy for the best actress.
