The WGA Awards were significantly delayed in the face of the writers’ strike, but they finally announced the winners this past weekend. The Holdovers and American Fiction stole the show in the movie categories, while Succession, The Bear, and Beef dominated the TV field.

Despite losing the Academy Award for best original screenplay at the Oscar to Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers won over the WGA Awards voters. David Hemingson won the trophy for writing this film, beating Air, Barbie, May December, and Past Lives.

Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction replicated its Oscars success, winning another trophy for the best original screenplay. It defeated tough competition in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Killers of the Flower Moon, Nyad, and Oppenheimer.

Winners in the TV categories were pretty easy to predict, and the three main awards went to TV shows that dominated the entire award season. Succession won best drama series, The Bear was named the best comedy series, while Beef was crowned the best limited series. The Last of Us collected the trophy for the best new series, despite losing in the best drama field.

The Writers Guild of America Awards took place on April 14, after being delayed by several months in the face of the writers’ strike.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival was one for the books and it introduced us to many of the year’s most anticipated films. American Fiction created more buzz than any other movie at TIFF and it walked away with the festival’s People’s Choice Award.

American Fiction stars Jeffrey Wright as author and English literature professor Thelonious “Monk” Ellison. Frustrated by the stereotypical representation of the Black community in modern literature, he decides to write a satirical novel that embraces every stereotype in the book—and he’s shocked to see it become a surprise bestseller.

In addition to Wright, the film’s star-studded cast also includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, and Adam Brody.

American Fiction draws inspiration from Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, which was adapted to the big screen by Cord Jefferson in his feature directorial debut. He thanked everyone who watched his movie in Toronto and helped it win the festival’s People’s Choice Award.

American Fiction was followed by Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, selected as the first and second runners-up for the People’s Choice Award.
