]]>And yet, that was not the case.
“I mean honestly, it wasn’t an easy decision at first,” Phoenix said of taking the part while at the Toronto Film Festival. “I didn’t f**ing know. I didn’t. But then there was something that was drawing me toward it. It just evolved as we worked together. It started becoming something more than I anticipated. It was one of the greatest experiences of my career.”
Phoenix’s performance earned a 10-minute standing ovation from critics when the Todd Phillips film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is likely to put him in line for Oscar attention.
As for the future of Phoenix’s Joker, Phillips says there is no plan to connect him to the upcoming Batman franchise starring Robert Pattinson.
“Oddly, in the states, comic books are our Shakespeare it seems, and you can do many many versions of Hamlet,” Phillips said. “There will be many more Jokers, I’m sure, in the future.”
Phoenix’s Joker can be seen in theatres on October 4th.

]]>After exploring time and space as the director of Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, DuVernay is now set to take on the DC Extended Universe with the Warner Bros. as the director of New Gods. The film is based on the DC Comics series of the same name, the handiwork of creator and designer Jack Kirby that was released in 1971.
Earlier this year, DuVernay broke barriers with the release of A Wrinkle in Time, being the first woman of color to direct a film with a production budget of $100 million. With New Gods, DuVernay is breaking glass ceilings in the film world once again as the second woman to undertake the making of a large-scale superhero movie, following Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.
DuVernay also directed the galvanizing documentary 13th and the powerful civil-rights drama Selma.
The movie focuses on the New Gods, the indigenous race of the twin planets New Genesis and Apokolips. New Genesis is a relatively peaceful planet ruled by Highfather, whereas Apokolips is a dystopian world tyrannized by the dictator Darkseid.
New Gods will be a welcome addition to the DC Extended Universe, joining other superhero movies such as Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Wonder Woman. Created in 2013, the DCEU continues to delve into the extensive DC library as Warner Bros. contends with Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
