The Mexican filmmaker picked up the top prize at the Directors Guild Awards last weekend.

Voted for by fellow directors in the industry, the award places him as the favorite to scoop up Best Director at the Academy Awards later this month.

Cuarón was handed the award by his friend and last year’s winner, Guillermo del Toro, telling him, “Thank you, cabron — you are my film career.”

“Roma simply doesn’t exist without the generosity of spirit and effortless grace of Yalitza (Aparicio) and Marina (De Tavira). They somehow with the rest of my beautiful cast managed to bring to life this film from my memory,” Cuarón said while accepting the award.

The 57 year old’s win follows his Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award, and places him en route for his second Oscar as the DGA has only been wrong 7 times in the last 71 years.
