After months of anticipation, the Academy Awards finally returned on Sunday night and brought many amazing moments our way. It was a big night for Dune, which picked up a total of six awards, but the best picture trophy went to Apple TV+ drama CODA.

The Sundance hit made history as the first streaming film and the first film with a predominately deaf leading cast to pick up the best picture trophy. It also came out victorious in the other two categories it was nominated for, including best supporting actor (Troy Kotsur) and best adapted screenplay (Sian Heder).

CODA’s victory comes as a shocker since Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was the biggest front-runner since the beginning of the race, but it only ended up winning the award for best director. As for Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s space opera picked up all of its six awards in technical categories.

Acting categories didn’t bring too many surprises our way. Will Smith (King Richard) and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) collected the Oscars for best actor and actress. When it comes to supporting categories, Kotsur was joined by Ariana DeBose (West Side Story).

The 94th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27 with Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes serving as hosts.

The Power of the Dog picked up countless shiny trophies this awards season, and it walked away with a few more at the BAFTAs. The critically acclaimed western won the award for best film, but Dune was the biggest winner of the night with five awards in the craft field.

Jane Campion’s latest film had to face tough competition in Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza in the best film category, but it eventually came out victorious. Campion also collected the award for the best director, becoming the third woman to do so.

Dune came into the night as the top nominee with a total of 11 nods and managed to win trophies in five different technical categories—best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

Will Smith cemented his status as the front-runner for best actor, after winning another award for King Richard. The award for best actress went to the underdog Joanna Scanlan for After Love. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) increased their Oscars chances after dominating supporting categories at another awards show.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards were held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on March 13th, with Rebel Wilson serving as a host.

The Critics’ Choice Awards is the latest ceremony to unveil its list of nominees, and some pretty great choices were made. Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story are leading the way, with eleven nominations each.

Both movies will be competing for the best picture, together with Dune, The Power of the Dog, and Don’t Look Up, among others. Branagh and Spielberg also scored nominations for the best director, but they’ll have tough competition in Jane Campion and Denis Villeneuve.

Campion’s The Power of the Dog and Villeneuve’s Dune both scored 10 nominations. They’re closely followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza and Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley with eight nods each, and both are competing for the best director, as well.

The announcement of film nominations comes a week after the critics declared the contenders in the TV categories. Succession led the way with eight nods, while Evil and Mare of Easttown came in second with five each. Only Murders in the Building, Ted Lasso, WandaVision, and This Is Us are also among the nominees for major prizes

The Critics’ Choice Awards will take place on January 9th, 2022 with Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer hosting the festivities.

Many film debuts have been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic and The Batman and Dune are the latest ones, while Matrix 4 has been moved up.

The sci-fi epic Dune from director Denis Villeneuve starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, and Zendaya will no longer premiere on December 18, 2020—it’s now slated for an October 1, 2021 debut.

The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves was supposed to be released on October 1, 2021, but it will now be released on March 4, 2022.

Matrix 4 has been moved up to December 22, 2021 instead of April 1, 2022.

News of these delays comes after James Bond sequel No Time to Die, which was set for a November release date, was pushed back to 2021. This decision causes Regal, the second-biggest U.S. theater chain, to close down its venues after reopening in August. Cinemark, another major theater, announced that they have no plants to close U.S. venues.

Comic book adventure films including The Flash and Shazam 2 have also been delayed. The superhero adventures Black Adam and Minecraft have been taken off the release calendar.
