It has been 50 years since John Lennon and Yoko Ono charmed audiences at Cambridge University.

Yoko has often been regarded as the reason for The Beatles’ demise, but she also served as a musical partner for her husband John. Shortly after The Fab Four’s break-up in 1969, John and Yoko performed their first public gig together on the 2nd of March.

Student publication, The Cambridge News, wrote about the experimental jazz concert, stating that Yoko opened with a “fearsome siren note” and included several examples of screaming, while John sat with his back to the audience for the duration of the show which lasted 26 minutes.

Regardless of the write-up, the performance has now been recognised 5 decades later with a plaque acknowledging the pair.

Stating “Yoko Ono John Lennon Cambridge 1969”, the plaque was donated to the university by art historian and curator of the forthcoming Ono exhibition, Gabriella Daris, and unveiled during a ceremony which featured a recording of their set.

We imagine John was there in spirit.
