The producer of the original stage production and the 2008 and 2018 film adaptations, Judy Craymer, told the Daily Mail that a third installment was in the works and that before the coronavirus pandemic hit she was planning the third film, “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog.”

“I think one day there will be another film because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it,” she continued.

Mamma Mia! uses the songs of ABBA to tell the story of Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie and her mother, Meryl Streep’s Donna. While Sophie’s planning her wedding, she starts to question who her father is and she invites three of her mother’s past boyfriends (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård) to her big day in the hopes of finding out who her dad is.

The 2018 sequel looks back at Donna’s backstory including her past relationships and how her band Donna and the Dynamos came to be, with Lily James playing a younger version of her.

Although a third film hasn’t been announced yet, Craymer said it could have new music from ABBA.

The 72-year-old is playing Ruby who is the mother to Donna — portrayed by Meryl Streep — and grandmother to Amanda Seyfried’s character, Sophie.

Whilst on the Today Show, the If I Could Turn Back Time singer expressed her love for Mamma Mia, revealing that she was basically a regular in the audience.

“I was a huge fan, I saw the musical on Broadway three times and was dancing in the aisles with everybody.”

And just how far does that love extend?

Enough to make an ABBA cover album!

“After I did Fernando [in the movie] I thought it would really be fun to do an album of ABBA songs, so I did,” she declared. “It’s not what you would think of when you think of ABBA, ’cause I did it in a different way.”
