]]>The 17-year-old Australian actress is a relative newcomer, who previously starred in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. She said that she’s really excited to embrace this character, especially since this role allows her to pay homage to her roots.
“My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me,” Laga‘aia said in a statement.
Laga‘aia is replacing Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original animated film and will soon return for its sequel. She previously said that she’s proud to pass this baton to the next woman of Pacific Island descent, who’ll get to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength.
The live-action remake of Moana will also star Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui, plus John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother, Sina, and Rena Owen as the revered Gramma Tala.
