Pinocchio really is about to become a real boy.

The story of the wooden puppet who comes to life and whose nose grows each time he lies is the latest Disney film set to receive a live-action remake.

The collection of reboots includes Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, with The Little Mermaid currently in development.

Chris Weitz, who wrote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and 2015’s live-action adaptation of Cinderella, has written the screenplay for Pinocchio and will produce with Andrew Miano as part of their production company, Depth of Field.

Paddington director, Paul King, was originally set to helm the film, but withdrew from the project at the beginning of the year for undisclosed reasons.

His replacement has now been reported as Robert Zemeckis, with the Back to the Future director believed to be in negotiations to direct. Zemeckis is currently occupied with the big-screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel, The Witches that is set to star Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer.

Tom Hanks was also initially eyeing the role of Geppetto, who creates Pinocchio, but passed on the part, meaning that no one is attached to the cast at this stage.

Monsters are going to have to make way for some more human-like characters in Guillermo del Toro’s new film.

But only just.

The Shape of Water director is set to delve into the world of animation by taking on Pinocchio for Netflix.

The Mexican filmmaker will also write and produce the stop-motion film which will be set in Italy in the 1930s and is set to be a musical.

“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio,” the Oscar winner said in a statement.

“In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

Production on the project, in collaboration with the Jim Henson Company, will begin in the fall.
