SpongeBob has been a firm fan favorite since 1999 when he was created by marine biology teacher and animator Stephen Hillenburg.

Since then, SpongeBob and his friends have won numerous awards, including Emmys, Kids’ Choice Awards, and BAFTA Children’s Awards, and have featured in a full-length film and Broadway musical.

Now, Nickelodeon has announced that a spin-off is in the works!

Numerous characters inhabit Bikini Bottom, leaving the network with a multitude of options to pursue.

While nothing has been confirmed as yet, ideas are believed to include standalones for side characters like Sandy Cheeks and Plankton.
