House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is no stranger to playing formidable heroines, and she’s getting ready to do it again! The Australian actress will join James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.

Alcock landed several TV roles in her home country of Australia as a teen, before rising to prominence as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. She’s been looking for her next big role ever since, and her search finally came to an end when she defeated Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly to be cast as Supergirl.

James Gunn confirmed her casting on social media and said he’s incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. He described her as “a fantastically talented young actor” and added he was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl.

Alcock is expected to lead her own DCU standalone movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but this project won’t mark her debut as Kara Zor-El. She’s expected to appear in another DC-based project before flying solo, but it’s still unclear if that project will be 2025’s Superman: Legacy, led by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.

Supergirl is one of the shows that defined The CW’s Arrowverse as we know it, and it will soon take its last flight. The sixth season will start shooting this month, but it will also be its last.

Supergirl premiered in 2015, and it centered on the adventures of Kara Danvers—Superman’s cousin and one of the last surviving Kryptonians. It was the third series set in the inter-connected Arrowverse, after Arrow and The Flash.

Melissa Benoist, who played the titular role in this series, said it’s been an honor portraying this iconic character and seeing the incredible impact her role had on the young girls around the world.

“She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful,” wrote Benoist on Instagram.

Deadline reported that the producers, the studio, the network, and Benoist came to a joint decision it’s better to end the show after several production delays and downward ratings. The number of episodes is yet to be announced, but the creative team behind this show has already started developing the storylines for them.
