The Color Purple chronicles the journey of the Southern African American woman Celie Harris over the course of four decades, as she tries to escape the memories of childhood abuse, find her identity, and forge her own path.

Walker’s book previously inspired Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, but the new adaptation isn’t a remake of the original. It draws inspiration from The Color Purple musical instead, which ran on Broadway between 2005 and 2008 and earned eleven Tony nominations.

This highly-anticipated musical will hit the theaters on December 25, and its cast includes Fantasia Barrin, Taraji P. Henson, Phylicia Mpasi, Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, Coleman Domingo, and Corey Hawkins.

The Color Purple continues the trend of hit Broadway musicals being adapted for the big screen, and it follows in the footsteps of West Side Story and In the Heights. Wicked and Mean Girls: The Musical are also getting Hollywood treatment, with new adaptations set to come out next year.
