Disney will be returning to the animal kingdom with a sequel to it’s 2019 The Lion King.

Barry Jenkins, the filmmaker behind Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk will direct the film. Jeff Nathanson, the writer of the screenplay for the 2019 movie, will return to write the follow-up.

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

The recent The Lion King reboot was directed by Jon Favreau and it got mixed reviews, but made $1.5 billion across global box offices.

The cast of the remake included the voices of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen and as Timon and Pumbaa, and James Earl Jones as Mufasa.

No release date has been announced for the sequel as the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the start of production.

According to sources, the new film will partly focus on Mufasa’s, Simba’s dad who dies during the first film, early years.

Disney hasn’t announced if the cast members from the remake will return for the sequel.

The circle of life never ends and now a whole new generation is being brought into the fold.

As part of Disney’s live-action reboots of all its classics, The Lion King will be released in July.

We already received a taste of the Hamlet retelling in November, courtesy of a teaser which included the film’s iconic beginning with the animal kingdom bowing in honor of their new prince’s birth.

As if that didn’t get you emotional enough, the full trailer certainly will.

The clip affirms the assumption that the CGI version will likely be a shot-for-shot remake of the animated version, which came out in 1994.

An all-star cast will be featured in the updated edition, including Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogan, Billy Eichner, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Kani, and John Oliver. James Earl Jones, Who lent his voice to the original, will be reprising his role as Mufasa.

We’ll feel the love on the 19th of July.

Hakuna Matata may be a wonderful phrase, but it could be getting Disney into trouble.

The Swahili saying first came to global recognition 24 years ago when The Lion King was released.

In the process, the Walt Disney Company decided to trademark the phrase which means “no worries.”

But Disney might have reason to worry as Kenyan activists have accused the company of effectively stealing their culture.

The trademark means the phrase cannot be used by any other organization or on merchandise by any other company unless with prior approval from Disney.

With “hakuna matata” being a common phrase in Swahili, many speakers have been shocked and angered by the trademark, leading to activists saying the company has no right to the phrase.

Guess it’s not such a problem-free philosophy…

Everything the light touches is their kingdom… including, apparently, world records.

The release of The Lion King live-action remake has been so eagerly anticipated, that it’s no wonder the teaser trailer has broken records!

Featuring the opening scene where baby Simba is introduced to the animal kingdom, who all bow in his honor, Mufasa can be heard saying, “Everything the light touches is our kingdom. But a king’s time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, the sun will set on my time here and will rise as you as the new king.”

The trailer was released on Thursday and managed to become Disney’s most-watched trailer in 24 hours.

It scored 224.6 million views worldwide — coming second, globally, only to Avengers: Infinity War which earned 238 million views.

It’s the circle of life!
