With a long-planned remake now coming to fruition, Warner Bros. has announced that the Braveheart filmmaker will take on directing and writing duties from Sam Peckinpah who both helmed the original and penned the screenplay.

Bryan Bagby will assist Mel with the script, while the Australian will also executive produce.

The original film starred Wiliam Holden, Ernest Borgnine, and Robert Ryan, though no cast members for the remake have been announced as yet.
