NBA Sportsmanship Award has been awarded annually since 1995/96 and is given to a player that “exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court with ethical behavior, fair play, and integrity.” The recipient gets the Joe Dumars Trophy, named by Detroit Pistons guard who was the inaugural winner.

Carter received 143 of possible 266 first-place votes while racking up 2,520 points to win the award. He was followed by Brooklyn Nets’ guard Garrett Temple (1,746 points) and Oklahoma City Thunder’s center Steven Adams (1,632 points), who finished second and third respectively.

During his 22 seasons in the NBA, Vince Carter played with eight different franchises, including Toronto Raptors, New Jersey Nets, and Atlanta Hawks. He made the All-Star game eight times while being selected into All-NBA teams twice. Carter also won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2000.

Following his retirement from NBA, Carter ventured into television and will serve as an NBA analyst with ESPN.
