After a lot of anticipation, Wicked finally hit the theaters this past week, and it’s truly defying gravity at the international box office. It grossed $112.5 million domestically for a worldwide total of $162.5 million, scoring the largest opening ever for a film based on a Broadway musical.

Set in the same universe as the cult classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked centers on a young woman named Elphaba, who faces discrimination during her time at Shiz University because of her green skin. She eventually finds an ally in the popular girl named Glinda, but their friendship reaches a crossroads that will forever seal their faith.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande lead the cast of this hit musical, while the supporting cast includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. Wicked is the first part of the two-part film adaptation, and the sequel will be released on November 21, 2025.

Positive word-of-mouth and the awards season buzz, paired with the popularity of the original musical, helped Wicked top the domestic box office with $112.5 million. It earned a total of $162.5 million worldwide, scoring the biggest opening for a movie based on a Broadway show, beating the worldwide opening of Les Miserables and the domestic opening of Into the Woods.

Wicked created more commotion than pretty much any Broadway musical in the past two decades, and its live-action adaptation is on the way. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star as Elphaba and Glinda in the new trailer for Wicked, which sees them taking the Land of Oz by storm.

Elphaba (Erivo) is a young and misunderstood young woman, who struggled to find her place at Shiz University due to her unusual green skin. After a rocky start, she forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda (Grande), a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition.

Their friendship reaches a crossroad following an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which will forever shape their fate, setting them on a path to become Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The trailer opens with the film’s central question – “Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” – and features snippets from the hit songs “Popular” and “Defying Gravity”. Several supporting cast members also make an appearance in the trailer, including onathan Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Bowen Yang.

Wicked is coming to theatres on November 27, and its sequel Wicked: Part Two is expected to be released a year later.
