House of the Dragon is finally returning for its second season this June, and things are going to be fire! HBO dropped a new trailer ahead of the long-awaited Season 2 premiere, giving us a glimpse of the Targaryens’ war of succession that we’ve been waiting for.
House of the Dragon takes us almost two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, and it chronicles the beginning of the end of the House Targaryen. The first season set the stage for the Dance of the Dragon, the war of succession that will reach its climax in Season 2.
Showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal compared the intrigue of the second season to classic James Bond Cold War films in and described it as a march to war.
“It’s really a cold war because each side is trying to undeniably win the throne for themselves without going to all-out dragon war. We do that through plotting and backstabbing and assassination and spy games,” Condal told Entertainment Weekly.
Season 2 will premiere on HBO on June 16, and it will feature a total of eight episodes. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke will reprise their roles from Season 1, along with Matt Smith, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans.
