Disney+ has given us many hit Star Wars series over the years, but The Acolyte failed to make the impact they were hoping for. The polarizing series won’t be back for the second season after the streaming giant decided to pull the plug and hand it an early cancelation.
Set during the final days of the High Republic, The Acolyte followed a former Padawan, who must reunite with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes involving sinister forces that they couldn’t see coming.
Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae led the show’s star-studded ensemble alongside Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, Margarita Levieva, Lauren Brady, Leah Brady, Harry Trevaldwyn, and David Harewood.
Disney+ didn’t give a reason for the cancelation of The Acolyte, but a combination of factors contributed to its downfall. Despite the fact The Acolyte was off to a solid start, its viewership numbers most likely weren’t high enough to justify the high costs involved with the series of this scope.
The Acolyte also divided the fans of the Star Wars franchise and became a target of a review-bombing campaign on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Despite polarizing audience response, this series was met with solid critical reviews, with many describing it as a fresh start for the franchise.
