The Hunger Games franchise is a gift that keeps on giving, and another film in this hit series is on the way. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will serve as another prequel to the original film series, and Lionsgate is eying a 2026 release date, with Francis Lawrence returning as a director.
Sunrise on the Reaping will take place on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, which went down in the Panem history as the Second Quarter Quell. Haymitch Abernathy (played by Woody Harrelson), who served as Katniss Everdeen’s in the original films, was the victor of these games and the upcoming film will capture his origin story.
The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins is looking forward to partnering up with Lionsgate since this movie studio has always been a wonderful home for her dystopian franchise.
“With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few…The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative,” said Collins in a statement.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theatres on November 20, 2026, and Francis Lawrence is in talks to return as a director.
