The Independent Spirit Awards are the latest ceremony to announce its list of winners leading up to the Oscars, with The Lost Daughter taking home the top prizes. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature directorial debut won three awards on Sunday night, including the best feature.
The list of contenders in this category also included A Chiara, C’mon C’mon, The Novice, and Zola, but they couldn’t stand their ground to The Lost Daughter. It was a big night for Gyllenhaal, as well, who won awards for the best director and best screenwriter for her work on this drama.
When it comes to the winners in the acting categories, Taylour Paige was named the best female lead for Zola, while Simon Rex won the trophy for the best male lead for Red Rocket. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ruth Negga (Passing) took top prizes in their respective supporting acting categories.
The Independent Spirit Awards introduced television categories last year and brought them back for another round. Reservation Dogs was the clear leader in this field, taking home awards for the best new scripted series and the best ensemble cast.
The Independent Spirit Awards were held on March 6th, with Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman serving as hosts.
