]]>The Mexican filmmaker picked up the top prize at the Directors Guild Awards last weekend.
Voted for by fellow directors in the industry, the award places him as the favorite to scoop up Best Director at the Academy Awards later this month.
Cuarón was handed the award by his friend and last year’s winner, Guillermo del Toro, telling him, “Thank you, cabron — you are my film career.”
“Roma simply doesn’t exist without the generosity of spirit and effortless grace of Yalitza (Aparicio) and Marina (De Tavira). They somehow with the rest of my beautiful cast managed to bring to life this film from my memory,” Cuarón said while accepting the award.
The 57 year old’s win follows his Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award, and places him en route for his second Oscar as the DGA has only been wrong 7 times in the last 71 years.

]]>After years of making films in English, the Mexican filmmaker decided to go back to his Spanish roots with his latest film, Roma.
Shot in black and white, the movie follows two domestic workers who take care of a small family in the neighborhood of Roma and is based on the 56-year-old’s memories from growing up in the ‘70s.
Roma has now been named as the winner of the Golden Lion at the 75th annual Venice Film Festival, beating 21 other entries for the top prize.
“This award and this festival are incredibly important to me,” said Alfonso who thanked producer, David Linde, and Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber of Netflix.
In a statement, Linde said, “This film is a gift to all audiences, transcending language and cultural barriers, and inspiring compassion across the globe.”
The festival’s other winners included Broadchurch actress, Olivia Colman, scooping up the Best Actress Award for her role in The Favourite which also claimed the Grand Jury Prize, while Murder on the Orient Express star, Willem Dafoe, took home Best Actor for portraying Vincent Van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate.
