BAFTA voters have shown a lot of love to All Quiet on the Western Front this year and awarded it with a total of seven trophies. In addition to topping the list of winners at this year’s ceremony, the German anti-war drama also walked away with the best film award.

All Quiet was competing against The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Tár, but the tough competition didn’t stop it from coming out victorious. This doesn’t come as a shocker since BAFTA voters made it clear they have a lot of love for this film when they gave it 14 nods—a record-breaking number for a non-English language film.

Edward Berger won the best director award for his work on this film, defeating the Daniels and Martin McDonagh. All Quiet came out victorious in five more categories: best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best original score, best sound, and best film not in the English language.

The list of major winners also included The Banshees of Inisherin and Elvis, with four awards each. Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy defeated the likes of Aftersun, Living, and Empire of Light to be named outstanding British film.

The 76th British Academy Film Awards were held on February 19 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond hosting for the first time.

The Power of the Dog picked up countless shiny trophies this awards season, and it walked away with a few more at the BAFTAs. The critically acclaimed western won the award for best film, but Dune was the biggest winner of the night with five awards in the craft field.

Jane Campion’s latest film had to face tough competition in Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza in the best film category, but it eventually came out victorious. Campion also collected the award for the best director, becoming the third woman to do so.

Dune came into the night as the top nominee with a total of 11 nods and managed to win trophies in five different technical categories—best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

Will Smith cemented his status as the front-runner for best actor, after winning another award for King Richard. The award for best actress went to the underdog Joanna Scanlan for After Love. Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) increased their Oscars chances after dominating supporting categories at another awards show.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards were held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on March 13th, with Rebel Wilson serving as a host.

While Netflix remains a contentious point at some festivals and award shows, the BAFTAs are not one of them.

Last year’s film Roma scooped up three Oscars and dozens of other awards, but its limited theatrical release caused controversy when it was nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

Cinema chains, AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas, both issued statements saying that Roma would not be part of their annual Best Picture showcase, while esteemed director, Steven Spielberg, expressed disapproval of streaming films being eligible for the Oscars.

Following extensive industry consultation, the British Academy, which is responsible for the BAFTA Awards, announced that it would continue to allow streaming services like Netflix and Amazon to compete.

The rules for eligibility require films to have been theatrically exhibited publicly to a paying audience on at least 10 commercial screens in the UK for at least an average of 7 days.

The 2020 BAFTAs are scheduled to take place on February 2nd — a week before the Oscars.

History has been made at this year’s BAFTA Awards.

The British film awards honor the best in the industry both internationally and the United Kingdom, making it the equivalent of Great Britain’s Academy Awards.

Nominations for the ceremony were announced on Wednesday, with British film The Favorite leading the pack with 12 nods.

The stars of the film — Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz — received individual recognition, while the picture itself was nominated for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director, among others.

A Star Is Born director Bradley Cooper achieved an impressive feat with the film’s 7 nominations, as he because the first person nominated for producer, director, writer, actor, and composer.

The record was shared with Alfonso Cuarón whose Spanish film, Roma, also garnered 7 nominations.

The BAFTA Awards will be hosted by Joanna Lumley at London’s Royal Albert Hall on the 18th of February.
