Barbie was always going to be the biggest cinematic event of the summer, but it exceeded our wildest expectations once it finally hit the theatres. Greta Gerwig’s latest film set several major box office milestones after scoring an impressive $337 million global opening.

Led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the first live-action film inspired by Mattel’s iconic doll chronicles Barbie’s journey of self-discovery after she leaves Barbieland for the Real World.

Barbie exceeded its box office projections after premiering on July 21, earning $155 million domestically and $182 million globally, for a worldwide total of $337 million. It scored the highest-grossing weekend for a film by a female director, and the largest opening for a non-sequel, non-remake, and non-superhero movie.

Andrew Cripps, Warner Bros president of international theatrical distribution, described Barbie’s success as “a testament to the filmmakers’ singular vision to provide a fun and engaging experience that audiences of all ages are responding to in a fun and powerful way.”

Barbie was in pretty good company at the global box office, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer grossing $174 million worldwide. The tonal difference between the two projects inspired the viral Barbenheimer phenomenon, and many moviegoers went to see them as a double feature, thus improving the box office numbers of both films.

Greta Gerwig is likely to have a different take on her Golden Globe-winning film, Lady Bug.

The 2017 film stars Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan as a mother and daughter navigating their relationship as Saoirse’s character completes her final year of high school.

Written somewhat autobiographically from Greta’s own experiences with her mother, the director will now have to examine the work from a new role — that of mother.

The 35-year-old has entered motherhood for the first time after giving birth to her first child with director Noah Baumbach.

The pair first met when the filmmaker cast Greta in his 2010 film Greenberg. Whilst always being extremely lowkey about the relationship, they are said to have been living together since late 2011.

The son is the first child for Greta and the second for Noah who already has a son called Rhomer with his ex-wife Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Congratulations on the little lady bug!

The upcoming adaptation of Little Women is proving to possess the créme de la créme of Hollywood actors.

The film will be the eighth big-screen adaptation of the novel by Louisa May Alcott.

The story tells the tale of sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy growing up in poverty in Massachusetts.

The latest version by Lady Bird director, Greta Gerwig, already boasts an A-list cast of Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Laura Dern, and Emma Watson.

The Beauty and the Beast actress replaced fellow Emma, Emma Stone, in the project due to scheduling conflicts, while Timothée and Saoirse previously worked with Greta on the Oscar-nominated Lady Bird.

The latest star to join the project is Academy Award winner, Chris Cooper.

No official roles have been announced as yet.

Greta’s Little Women is scheduled for release on the 25th of December 2019.

One “Emma” out — another “Emma” in.

Emma Stone has had to pull out of the upcoming adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women.

The film, by Ladybird director, Greta Gerwig, already boasts a cast which includes Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Florence Pugh, and James Norton.

The La La Land actress is no longer able to join the project as a result of promotional obligations for the Fox Searchlight film, The Favourite.

But worry not, because another Emma will be taking her place.

Enter, Beauty and the Beast actress, Emma Watson!

The irony is that this is not the first time that the two Emmas have swapped roles, as Miss Stone was originally supposed to star in the Disney remake, and Miss Watson in the Oscar-winning musical.

It has not yet been established just which role Emma (Watson) will play in the star-studded production which is scheduled for release in 2019.
