Steve Nash never managed to win an NBA title as a player, despite coming close on several occasions. But he sure hopes he’ll get one as a coach.

During a recent virtual town hall appearance with season-ticket holders, Nash talked about the expectations the Nets team faces next season and admitted that anything else than a championship win would be considered a failure.

“We’re playing for a championship,” said Nash. “I don’t want to say that anything less than a championship is not a success because you never know what happens in life … Fortune is a big part of winning an NBA championship. But we are playing for a championship, and we’re going to build accordingly.”

Delivering in his first year as a coach is a mammoth task for a first-year head coach, even if Nash comes with great credentials that include two MVP awards. But it isn’t like he doesn’t have the necessary tools to deliver this.

Brooklyn Nets finished 2019/20 as No.7 seed in the East before being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Toronto Raptors. Considering that his team will have two All-Stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving join next season, it isn’t a surprise Nets are considered a heavy favorites to reach the NBA Finals.

Still, a lot of things will have to click for Nets in order for this to happen.

Irving and Durant will have to return to the elite level, which isn’t exactly easy when you are coming back from season-ending injuries. Also, there is a problem considering the team chemistry, as the addition of the duo might mess the unity that carried the underdog Brooklyn team to success in the past.

Well have to wait until the start of the season to see whether Nash manages to navigate through all of this and finally get himself that ring.

Detroit Pistons are engaged in a complete rebuild, which means that there is little to no space on their team for expensive veteran players. This already led to the trade of All-Star Andre Drummond, and reportedly, Blake Griffin could be next in line.

Speaking on his popular podcast, ESPN’s Zach Lowe recently discussed Griffin’s situation and said that Pistons are ready to move on from the player. But this could be easier said than done.

According to Lowe, the six-time All-Star forward is an interesting option for several teams, but the Pistons are not expected to have a strong market for him. This is most probably due to Griffin’s injury history and the $75.6 million he is owed in the next two years.

Lowe adds that he expects Griffin to fetch a first-round pick at max, but such trade would probably see Detroit also taking some money back.

Since joining the Pistons from LA Clippers in January 2018, Blake Griffin failed to perform at the level he was excepted. Griffin struggled with injuries, playing only 118 games in three years while averaging 22.2 points and 6.9 rebounds during that period.

Griffin will now have to show that he left the health issues behind him if he expects any team to take a bet on him. So far, there are no obvious landing spots for him, but teams that believe are one player from contention might roll the dice on the 31-year-old.

Houston Rockets continue their search for a new head coach, hosting LA Clippers’ assistant Tyron Lue for an interview this week. According to reports, the two sides met on Monday to discuss the vacancy.

Shortly after arriving in Houston, Lue had a chat with the media and said that he’s “happy for the opportunity.”

“It means a lot, just to have an opportunity to come in and interview for a head coaching job here in Houstonת” Lue told reporters. “It’s very exciting. I’m very happy to be here. Having an opportunity to have a chance to coach two MVP players in Russell Westbrook and James Harden, along with Gordon and a lot of other good players. I’m just happy for the opportunity.”

Lue is considered one of the frontrunners for the Rockets’ job, but he is a highly sought-after candidate this offseason. The 43-year-old previously had interviews with New Orleans Pelicans and Clippers and is the favorite for the latter vacancy.

Tyron Lue previously coached the Cleveland Cavaliers, leading the franchise to its first NBA championship in the 2015/16 season. Lue was fired by Cleveland early in the 2018/19, exiting the organization with a 211-128 regular-season record and 41-20 playoffs record as a head coach.

Besides Lue, the Rockets are also looking into other candidates and will reportedly interview Jeff Van Gundy and their player development coach John Lucas for the job this week.

Doc Rivers didn’t even last a week on the job market after parting ways with the Los Angeles Clippers. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Rivers agreed to become a new head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rivers was contacted by the 76ers shortly after becoming available, with Philly wanting to get ahead of the rest interested teams. The two sides had engaged in negotiations in recent days and didn’t waste time hammering a deal.

Reportedly, Rivers will ink a five-year deal with the organization.

The 76ers hope that Doc Rivers will help the franchise to take the next step after they suffered disappointing early playoffs exits under Brett Brown. There is also an expectation that Rivers can get the best out of the team’s young All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons and figure out their fit on the court.

Philadelphia 76ers initially zeroed in on ex-Houston Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni and Clippers’ assistant Ty Lue in their search. However, 76ers shifted their focus to Rivers once he became available, seeing him as the better fit for the team.

Rivers, on the other hand, received interest from several other franchises, including New Orleans Pelicans and Houston Rockets. However, he was intrigued by the 76ers’ talented roster, history, and organization, which ended up prompting him to reject other suitors and come to Philly.
