Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans was one of the most anticipated films to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s living up to the hype. The famed director’s deeply personal new film won TIFF’s top honor—the People’s Choice Award.

The Fabelmans managed to defeat Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to win this prestigious accolade. The list of major winners at the festival also included the Midnight Madness winner Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and the best documentary winner Black Ice.

Spielberg said he’s glad he brought this film to Toronto, adding that the warm reception from everyone made his first visit to TIFF intimate and personal, both for himself and the rest of The Fabelmans cast and crew.

“Thank you to [the festival director] Cameron Bailey and the incredible staff at TIFF; thank you to Universal Pictures, and a very special thank you to all the movie fans in Toronto who have made this past weekend one I’ll never forget,” said Spielberg in a statement.

The Fabelmans is a semi-autobiographical tale inspired by Spielberg’s childhood when he aspired to become a young filmmaker. Its cast is led by Gabriel LaBelle, with Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles.

This past weekend everyone’s favorite ET from the Steven Speilberg 1982 classic returned back to earth.

A Holiday Reunion is 4 minutes long and you’ll see E.T reconnecting with Elliot, played by Henry Thomas, only Elliot is no longer a child; he’s married with two kids who look very similar to a younger version of Elliot and Gertie, who was played by Drew Barrymore. The film looks similar to the original and it plugs Xfinity.

“The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people’s minds and hearts,” Thomas said.

A Holiday Reunion was first shown on Thursday during NBC’s Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade and promotional videos were seen throughout Thursday during ads on NBC primetime and NFL games on CBS and Fox. 30-second versions are currently being shown at movie theatres and they’ll continue until January 5.

E.T not only won four Oscars, but it was also a huge success in theatres grossing over $359 million in the U.S and $304 million internationally.

Netflix may have been recognized by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts, but not all those in the industry are in favour.

The streaming service’s film Roma blazed across the recent awards season, scooping up several accolades, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Director at the 2019 Academy Awards.

Despite the quality of the streamer’s fare or its achievements, veteran director Steven Spielberg has continuously voiced his disapproval of Netflix’s films being included in film awards ceremonies as the pictures do not show in theatres, believing instead that they should be nominated for Emmys and not Oscars.

The Schindler’s List director will now head to the Academy Board of Governors next month to again address the situation.

“Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation,” said a spokesperson for Spielberg’s production company Amblin. “He’ll be happy if the others will join [his campaign] when that comes up [at the Academy Board of Governors meeting]. He will see what happens.”

The Academy has subsequently released a statement saying that the Board will likely consider the topic at the April meeting.

In response to the situation, Netflix released a statement via Twitter, defending its films and its access for people who cannot afford to watch in cinemas:

Is it just us or does this feel like the 2019 version of talkies versus silent films?
